congratulations to the BE on earning via "on the field performance" the next 2 years of BCS autobid status. It was obvious, but I'm sure it's nice to see it in writing.

Quote:The nation's six marquee conferences also are maintaining their preferred status. Champions of those leagues — ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC — will continue to qualify automatically, based on their teams' performances over the past four years.

The BCS weighs three benchmarks: the average rank of each conference's highest-ranked team over the four-year period, the average rank of all the league's teams and the number of league teams finishing in the top 25. Though the Mountain West and Western Athletic have had undefeated teams crack the BCS lineup the past two seasons, neither conference had the overall success to claim an additional automatic berth.

The Big East had the fewest top 25 teams (11) and its top team carried the lowest average ranking (No. 9) among the top six conferences in that four-year period. The Mountain West and WAC each placed only four teams in the final regular-season rankings in those four years and, on average, their top teams didn't crack the top 12.

"It was a pretty easy decision," Swofford said.

barring a disaster or the bcs imploding, the BE is in thru 2011. The last 2 yrs were years 1 and 2 of the next review period. The WAC has also started strong.

BE 2 in top 12, 7 teams top 25, avg conf ranking = 3
WAC 2 in top 12, 3 teams top 25, avg conf ranking =8
MWC 2 in top 25, avg conf ranking= 7

Wouldn't this piece of criteria put us at a disadvantage because we have only eight teams?

No, the ruling is something having 25% of your league ranked on average (or for the Big East, at least 2 Top 25 teams per year). That was probably put in to help smaller leagues like the Big East.

Was there really any doubt about the BE retaining the bid?

The "New" Big East, at full strength, is 3-0 in BCS bowl games.

West Virginia over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl
Louisville over Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl
West Virginia over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl

The ACC is something like 1-8 in BCS bowl games, 0-3 since the "new" ACC was at full strength. Maybe MWC fans should complain about them. The Big East has left the MWC in the rearview mirror.

Is there any doubt BE gonna retain the BCS bid? I can't believe people actually would question that anymore. Our teams can compete with anyone in the country. People need to go back and re-watch the WVU vs. OU and WVU vs. UGA BCS games.

I can't believe they would question it either. The heat was on the BE since it didn't have a host BCS bowl agreement as an ace in the hole.

I only wish one of the conferences would have been closer so maybe the formula would be made public. It was such a blow out though, no one can argue.

We need to split and add Memphis and a tenth team that is strong in football.

Actually, I believe that the Big East is a partial host of the Orange Bowl. That's why Louisville ended up there. I could be wrong.

No - the BE is not a partial host with the ACC for the Orange. Louisville happened to play in the Orange because the ACC went next to last in the order to pick teams. The Fiesta went last and picked Boise.

Going forward, here is the order the bowls select teams unless one of the bowl games loses a team to the championship. They then select first.

January 2009 games: Fiesta, Sugar, Orange
January 2010 games: Orange, Fiesta, Sugar

There is a good chance the BE champ will goto the Orange again next year if there are no non-auto BCS teams eligible and the ACC doesn't have a team goto the championship because the Orange picks last.

The rules are here (see item #3):

They may not be officially a partial host but, in reality, they're a partial host. When Miami left for the ACC the Big East lost that status but, for all intents and purposes, the Big East and Orange Bowl still have a relationship.

While I agree with your saying those examples aren't the Big East being Dominate it's examples of WVU being dominate. The BE as a conference needs on or two teams up there with WVU consistently for our preception to be greatly improved. Yes UL won the conference and a BCS bowl in 2006 but the perception is that they drove off a cliff in 07. No other team in the BE has really been consistently elite(besides WVU) over the three year span . I dunno about you guys but I don't want to be considered as WVU and the seven dwarves.
