temple I think you will find the big 12 only fills their spot around 1/2 to 1/3 of the time. BE would play TCU most of the time. International bowl is pretty easy trip for North eastern part of BE to make.

Since 1992 when SEC expanded to 12. SEC has only had at-large at nine or ten, 2 times. In 2000, Ark played in LV. And 2007 when So Car sat at home.
Since Tex bowl came back in 2000, B-12 has had team there 7 out of 8 yrs. 2 of the 3 times TCU was there, TCU was filling in for SEC.

would have been better to keep finger in texas, but for BE its only 2 spots in 4 years. Your acting like they gave up a 4 yr garaunteed bowl vs bcs opp. You can't go back to 92 to compare because 6-6 wasn't eligible as was not 1AA wins. The last 2 years are the only one's valid. The sec had 10 and 9 eligible the last 2 and are expecting at least that with inc 1AA on schedule.

only 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007 had 12 games schedules since 1992 when the SEC expanded. In principle this deal is good. However, I am with you temple, I wonder how often the SEC will have enough teams. Most years it will be SEC #10 because the SEC will get two BCS teams. You also have to consider the possibility that some team will be on probation.

Anyone know if they inceased the payout to at least the minimum of 750k? I assume they would with the SEC on board.

RE: BE gave up Hous bowl
yes, I know they gave up one game, but talk on this board for the last 4 yrs has been to get out of Hous. And I tought it would be a mistake. Nobody knows how this will play out untill the end of season. But if ND wins 6 games & SEC doesn't have any body, BE has bowl eligable sitting at home & plays Lous-Monroe in Bir. Keeping Tex bowl guarantees that this doesn't happen. It's also remotely possiable that BE expands, BE needs the bowl games.
So far BE has sent Rutgers & C-USA sent Hous. Lets spectulate that ND gets 6 wins & following yr UTEP or SMU go & now the contracts up. What does the Tex bowl do, They know C-USA will always be there for them when need them. But The BE sent ND & Rutgers. Tex bowl signs BE for TV markets & B-12 pushing for BCS conf

Thank you Hoquista, I have no promblem with what's going on with Bir. Flat out giving the game up is STUPID. I also double checked 2002 & 2003, 2002 Kentuky & Alabama were on probation. 2003 only 8 teams were eligable. 2006 SEC had 2 BCS bids, 2007 South Car would have been there.

temple fan you need to spend more time thinking of mac rather than be.. BE did just fine in this shake out. they gained a fla bowl..(4 games in 4 years) gained SEC opponant in Birmingham, and lost only a 2 game bowl in houston.. this deal had tons of horse trading to the advantage of all involved.

But overall...those odds will only get BETTER/EASIER as most teams with the 12th game...are just adding an easy home game to their schedule.

Just look at a recent Alabama season (2006) ...when they went just 2-6 in SEC Conf play...but got to play FOUR non-conf home games vs Hawaii, Duke, FIU and Louisiana-Monroe...and Bama won all those 4 games...and went BOWLING as a 6-6 team (even though they were just 2-6 in Conf Play), and eventually lost to Oklahoma St in the Independence Bowl to finish 6-7 overall.

Iowa did the same thing in 2006 as well.

Iowa went 2-6 in Big 10 play...but beat Montana, Northern Illinois, Iowa St and Syracuse...to finish the season 6-6.

Iowa lost to Texas in the Alamo Bowl and finished 6-7 as well.

Bottom line...teams needed to win 6 games during 11 game seasons...and teams could only count 1 win over a Div I-AA school once every 4 years.

Now...teams still need just 6 games to win to be bowl eligible...but they have 12 games to do it in...plus...teams can count a Div I-AA win EVERY year to do so.

More and more teams will have 6 or more wins in future years...vs the number from the past during those 11 game seasons.
