UC is only below 925 in one sport, basketball, with an 872. We already served our penalty and as bad as the number is, it is on the rise. We took a big hit during our coaching transitions.

WVU's numbers looked well within the range required for all sports - men's and women's :ncaabbs:

MSNBC.com picked up a story about a BCS Program that fell short in several sports...but won't lose any scholarships:

So you are saying it is a non story apparently, KL. The NCAA decides whether a program deserves it after it looks at all the circumstances surrounding the issues, and they decided USF didn't deserve to be penalized. Apparently the full story shows that they were working within the best interests of the student athlete.

LOL. Amazing that you are on this board still worrying about USF with all the crap going on at UCF this summer. But notice NO USF fan has being to the CUSA board to post about either case.

Well as you can see we are going in right direction and making the progress needed. Too bad that those predictions by your fellow fans didnt come true.

So run along and worry about all the crap going at "squeaky clean" UCF. LOL

The Charleston Gazette Wrote:3 WVU teams face scholarship hit
By Mitch Vingle

Two days after West Virginia University's Faculty Senate said school president Mike Garrison should resign over the Heather Bresch academic scandal, the school's athletic department has suffered a black eye.

Three WVU athletic teams face scholarship losses next season for failing to meet NCAA academic standards.

Men's soccer, wrestling and women's rowing all fell short of the minimum Academic Progress Rate of 925. The only other school among the Bowl Championship Series conferences with more than one failing sport is Tennessee.

West Virginia's combined APR for its varsity teams was 956, according to data released by the NCAA. WVU's cross country team scored a perfect 1,000.

"Overall, I'm pleased with our APR scores for the year," said Mountaineer athletic director Ed Pastilong via a school release. "The scores are strong and our teams have made good academic progress as evidenced by more than 400 student-athletes being named to the Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll."

"I want to congratulate the cross country team for its perfect score. As far as the teams that fell below the 925 score, those issues have been addressed with each program and I'm confident in their improvement plans for the future. Overall, our 956 APR score is strong."

When reached for further comment, Pastilong, who is attending a Fiesta Bowl function in Phoenix, pointed to coaching changes in two of the sports hit with scholarship reductions.

"In soccer and rowing we've had two sports in transitions," he said. "We have all those areas shored up now. We have exceptional coaches in each."

"In wrestling, we had an unusual situation with an athlete that cost us four points. We have all three [sports] under control and feel good about it."

Pastilong said WVU tried to help an ineligible wrestler with a scholarship. But the athlete failed to become eligible and then left Morgantown before wrestling a match.

In rowing, Nancy LaRocque was replaced by Jimmy King as coach on Aug. 18, 2007. Marlon LeBlanc took over for Mike Seabolt as the men's soccer coach in preseason camp of 2006. Wrestling coach Craig Turnbull has been at the school since 1979.

A call to assistant AD Garrett Ford, who is in charge of academics, was not immediately returned.

Cross country led WVU's teams, followed by women's soccer (988), outdoor track (988), indoor track (987), tennis (985), rifle (984), volleyball (980), women's swimming (974), gymnastics (970), men's swimming (956), football (935), men's basketball (932), baseball (928), women's basketball (924), rowing (919), wrestling (905) and men's soccer (898).

According to WVU, the men's soccer team will now have 9.78 scholarships in 2008-09 from a maximum 9.9. Wrestling will be dropped to 9.02 from a maximum 9.9. Rowing will fall from a maximum of 20 to 18.99.
