There are still a few wrinkles to work out for WVU. But I liked White's passing numbers. He completed a high percentage of his passes, and would have had several more completions if the receivers had just held onto balls that hit them in the hands. His interception was a dropped ball, caught on a tip after it passed through the receiver's hands. He didn't run much, but then again neither did anyone else, so he was the leading rusher for the Mountaineers.
You could tell it was their first game of the season though. The offense looked pretty good. But their timing is still a bit off, so they need a little more time to gel. Hopefully, they'll work out the kinks in time for ECU.
The defense is still a work in progress. Coach Kirlav was tweaking the D-line the whole game. He may have found the combination that worked. But we'll find out for sure next week. I think the defense worked best with Slavonic, Ford, and Leibeig on the line. Linebackers were no problem. They dominated when needed. Villanova was moving the ball very effectively between the 20s. But when they got close, except for 2 scores (
I discount the gift against the 3rd team with 1 sec. remaining), the defense held or got the turnover. The secondary needs to learn how to work together. There were way too many blown assignments, and people out of position.
It could have been the Villanova QB though. That sucker is pretty good. I know somebody who'd like to have him in Ann Arbor...
I imagine the coaches are in the film room now breaking down the mistakes, as well as doing prep for East Carolina.
